As a teacher, I will make sure that each one of my students feels welcomed and comfortable in my classroom. I believe that it is the teachers responsibility to take time to get to know each one of their students strengths and weaknesses. It's the teachers duty to actively learn each one of their students individual needs so that each student has a fair opportunity to learn. It's also necessary that teachers provide their students with options. Without providing students with modifications, adaptions and individual educational plans, the teacher is hindering the students chances to succeed in the classroom. Healthy communication between students and their teachers is necessary in order to ensure that a all students feel comfortable and able.
The drama classroom is a very flexible and accommodating work environment. It is common for Drama teachers to allow their students to find a work space that best promotes efficient learning. In drama, the majority of the evaluations require students to perform in front of others. At times, this makes it difficult to create an inclusive environment and accommodations for students who refuse to speak in front an audience. Shyness plays a significant role in earlier Drama classes and could leave a negative impact on a students future. In my last practicum, I worked closely with a student who was struggling with speaking in front of large crowds. I was able to modify the assignment and provide this student with alternative, yet similar, tasks.
By providing our student(s) with the proper assistive devices, our students will feel in charge of their learning. Being in charge of their own learning and/or positively changing their ability to effectively work in a classroom, will inevitably make the student feel more engaged in the material being taught and will allow student(s) to feel independent in the classroom.
